Laporan Media Asing Mengenai Malaysia Yang mungkin akan menaikkan kemarahan anda menjelang Ramadhan
Counter-culture versus religious authorities
ON July 13, the Los Angeles Times (LAT) published a critical report on Malaysia, specifically on how the counter-culture was censured by mainstream conservatives, the censures being the banning of a gay arts festival, the Erykah Badu concert on the account that the name "Allah" was tattooed on her body and Irshad Manji's most recent treatise, all of which the authorities insisted had belittled Islam.
The LAT report, while obscure and insignificant, was to be expected, coming from an American newspaper that represents the kind of lifestyle that conservative Muslims worldwide reject.
But what was curious about the LAT report was its "political" intonation: key rebuffs claimed that the censures were "largely about political power", "erosion in support" for the prime minister and his ruling Barisan Nasional, and how the government is fanning "fear" of secularism and spread of religions other than Islam.
What the LAT cannot fathom is that Malaysian voters' psyche are far more elusive and sophisticated than what the newspaper might like to think. In any case, the LAT, or should we say, the reporters who filed the report, were deceived on all counts.
Contrary to what people perceive, the religious/security authorities have always marshalled Malaysia the way it has always been -- unilateral and uncompromising.
They have acted that way for the past three decades -- prime ministers or political parties be damned -- because they see themselves as an autonomous outfit with the strict credo that sensitivities of the ummah and their spiritual integrity are far more important than anything else.
In that sense, the separation of powers between executive and religious authorities is plainly heard, seen and perceived because issues of religious nature have a life of its own whether the prime minister intervenes or not.
Many people, including Muslims, objected to the glib manner in which the counter-culture was dismissed by the religious authorities, but a reminder: these authorities represent the Muslim majority, including Pas, which silently applauded the move only because it would have done the same thing had it been in power.
Najib is acutely aware of the explosive nature of religion; either from the mainstream vista or the deviant crazies, but to claim that he was instrumental in the censures suggests a myopic understanding of the religious authorities and its implements.
The "erosion of support" suffered, as the LAT puts it, is speculative. The daily is content on heeding only to the counter-culture and their advocates, and perhaps deluded into believing that the majority is on their side.
On the contrary, the BN government, despite ruling for three generations, simply cannot fan "fear" of secularism and spread religions other than Islam on the whim because of the system of checks-and-balances, both formal and informal.
Critics have to be constantly reminded that BN works as a coalition of parties that counter-balance any move deemed too radical to stomach. As much as Islam is Malaysia's official religion, secularism is rooted only in the counter-culture that has no influence outside the confluences of its comfort zone.
This has always been the understanding: counter-culture activities are tolerated only because of their confinement in their comfort zone.
But the moment they try to breach into the mainstream, such as demanding for equal rights, same-sex marriage and push ideas on the same platform as other religions, these clamouring will be firmly rejected, hence the understandable retaliation we see from the religious authorities.
Break this unwritten understanding or try to be bigger than what you really are or try to impose the idea of a tyrannical minority, then all bets are off.
Another thing: the LAT report implies that the people advocating gay festivities, Erykah Badu and Irshad Manji are "weaklings", which is a laugh: these people are well-funded, legally muscular, advocacy spirited, internationally connected and thoroughly savvy, so they cannot be easily defeated.
The perspective to all this is simple: for all they have battled for, nobody's nose was sliced, nobody's sons were lynched and nobody's daughters were "honourably" murdered. This is Malaysia's slice of good fortune. Intimidation comes in the form of rhetoric and the occasional court case.
The same can't be said about the poor brethren in certain Middle-East nations that celebrate the cult of punishment by death, even if the crime is a mere insult.

Gapena: Pemimpin 'tolol' punca masalah bahasa
