The Ivy Bridge Has Landed : Intel Launches 3rd-Gen Core Processors

Finally, the much awaited successors to Intel Sandy Bridge-based Core line of processors - the Ivy Bridge - are finally here. Officially called as the 3rd generation Core processors, they are the first line of processors to be produced using Intel’s new 22nm tri-gate fabrication technology and promises a number of improvements over its predecessor such as better performance with lower power consumption, enhanced security and better graphics performances.
One of the new features that is included inside the new 3rd generation Intel Core processors is the new Intel HD Graphics 4000 built-in graphics core that promises up to twice the performance of the previous Intel HD Graphics inside Sandy Bridge-based Core processors as well as the support for DirectX 11, OpenGL 3.1 and OpenCL 1.1. Intel has also further improved their famed Quick Sync Video encoding and decoding technology in the Ivy Bridge-based Core processors and is now able to provide up to double the speed as compared to Sandy Bridge.

The chip maker has also built a digital random key generator dubbed as the Intel Secure Key as well as a new defensive mechanism against remote hacking called Intel OS Guard right into the new 3rd generation Ivy Bridge processors. Last but not least, Intel has also included native support of USB 3.0 and PCI Express 3.0 in the Ivy Bridge platform which in theory should be able to improve the platform’s data transfer capabilities.

The new Intel Ivy Bridge family members – consisted of 15 new processors, 10 new chipsets and 5 new wireless options – will begin to appear in the market starting from this month onwards with additional versions to be made available later this year.
